چکیده

Abstract. Despite the importance of vegetation uptake atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (Hg(0)) within global Hg cycle, little knowledge exists on physiological, climatic, and geographic factors controlling stomatal Hg(0) by tree foliage. We investigate controls foliar combining measurements 3569 foliage samples across Europe with data species' traits environmental conditions. To account for accumulation over time, we normalized concentration life period from simulated start growing season to sample harvest. The most relevant parameter impacting daily was functional group (deciduous versus coniferous trees). On average, measured 3.2 times higher rates in deciduous leaves than needles same age. Across species, beech fir, at two out three forest plots more 20 samples, found a significant (p<0.001) increase values respective leaf nitrogen concentrations. therefore suggest that is controlled increasing low high nutrient content representing physiological activity. For pine spruce needles, detected linear decrease proportion time during which water vapor pressure deficit (VPD) exceeded species-specific threshold 1.2 3 kPa, respectively. surface soil (ERA5-Land) region correlated negatively pine. These findings inhibited under VPD conditions and/or due regulation conductance reduce loss dry Other parameters associated sampling sites (latitude altitude), sampled trees (average age diameter breast height), or regional satellite-observation-based transpiration product (Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model: GLEAM) did not significantly correlate rates. conclude activity response should be implemented model assess future cycling different anthropogenic emission scenarios warming.

Physiological and physicochemical controls on foliar volatile organic compound emissions.

Plant leaves emit a broad spectrum of organic compounds that typically play multiple roles in plant protection. Furthermore, most of these compounds actively participate in tropospheric chemistry. There has been rapid progress in understanding how the emission of volatiles is regulated, mostly focusing on the biochemical controls over compound production. However, physicochemical characteristic...

Molecular mechanisms of foliar water uptake in a desert tree.

Water deficits severely affect growth, particularly for the plants in arid and semiarid regions of the world. In addition to precipitation, other subsidiary water, such as dew, fog, clouds and small rain showers, may also be absorbed by leaves in a process known as foliar water uptake. With the severe scarcity of water in desert regions, this process is increasingly becoming a necessity. Studie...

Distribution and uptake dynamics of mercury in leaves of common deciduous tree species in Minnesota, U.S.A.

A sequential extraction technique for compartmentalizing mercury (Hg) in leaves was developed based on a water extraction of Hg from the leaf surface followed by a solvent extraction of the cuticle. The bulk of leaf Hg was found in the tissue compartment (90-96%) with lesser amounts in the surface and cuticle compartments. Total leaf concentrations of Hg varied among species and was most closel...

Benefits of European Climate Policies for Mercury Air Pollution

This paper presents the methodology and results of impact assessment of renewable energy policies on atmospheric emissions of mercury in Europe. The modeling exercise described here involves an interaction of several models. First, a set of energy scenarios has been developed with the REMix (Renewable Energy Mix) model that simulates different levels of penetration of renewable energies in the ...

Foliar Potassium Application on Olive Tree

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of potassium (K) fertilization on vegetative growth, fruit production and leaf mineral content of olive tree (Olea europeae L.) under rainfed condition. Different fertilizer, techniques and rates of application were applied in 2003 on Chemlali olive. The potassium fertilizer used was potassium nitrate. The foliar fertilizer rates were 50 an...
